Fire Hose Couplings: A Compatibility Checklist for Buyers

Confirm the mating connection and hose attachment separately. A shared nominal size or similar appearance is not a complete compatibility check.

What makes a coupling inquiry complete?

A complete inquiry identifies the hose, both mating connection faces and the intended equipment. Include the connection type, relevant dimensions, attachment arrangement and gasket requirements, then ask for written confirmation of the proposed assembly. The nominal diameter printed on a hose does not describe every dimension of its coupling. Treat an unidentified existing fitting as something to identify, not as proof that a visually similar replacement will connect correctly.

Record both ends of the connection

Describe what joins to what: hose to valve, hose to nozzle, or hose to another hose. Photograph both connection faces, the side profile and any readable identification. Add a drawing with the dimensions requested by the supplier. If the order includes several connection types, separate them into different line items. A photo of one fitting may help start identification, but hidden thread details, the gasket and hose attachment still require review.

Measure the actual connection

For Storz connections, the manufacturer’s measurement guidance identifies lug spacing as a dimension used to distinguish connection sizes. Do not replace a dimensional check with a nominal hose-size label. For threaded connections, provide the exact thread designation and mating arrangement rather than only a diameter. Have the selected coupling and its mating equipment checked together. This guide provides a purchasing checklist, not universal dimensions or an installation approval for an unidentified fitting.

Confirm the hose attachment and seal

Specify whether the order is for loose couplings or a finished hose assembly. Ask which hose-tail dimensions and attachment arrangement are proposed for the selected hose construction. Confirm the gasket requirements and any required material information. Keep the assembly’s pressure and test requirements tied to its exact model; the appearance of a metal component does not establish the performance of the completed assembly. If a drawing or sample is revised, identify the revised version in the order.

Review a matching sample before a larger order

When replacement compatibility is uncertain, agree how a matching sample or dimensioned drawing will be evaluated before the bulk order. Record the buyer’s mating equipment and the scope of the review. Reliant Fire can supply Storz, BS, NH/NST, GOST, Machino and Nakajima options, with the actual connection specification checked per order. The connection name is a starting point for that discussion; it is not a blanket statement of compliance with every system or market using the same name.

Frequently asked questions

Will two fittings marked with the same size always connect?

No. The size label is not a complete connection specification. Compare the connection type, dimensions and mating arrangement.

What should I measure on a Storz coupling?

Obtain the relevant connection dimensions, including lug spacing, using the selected manufacturer’s guide. Do not assume the hose bore and connection size are interchangeable.

Are photographs enough for a replacement inquiry?

They are a useful start. Add a drawing or measured details and identify the equipment that the replacement must join.

Should I order loose fittings or a coupled hose?

State which you need in the inquiry. The supply scope and the hose attachment review differ between loose components and a finished assembly.

Can Reliant Fire review several coupling types in one order?

Yes. List each requested type and quantity separately, with the matching equipment and dimensions. Confirm each proposed configuration before ordering.

Does a successful fit prove the pressure rating?

No. Fit and performance are separate questions. Request the model-specific pressure and test information required for the intended assembly.
